How STEP import works
STEP (ISO 10303) stores exact CAD surfaces (B-rep), not triangles. To draw a wireframe we first tessellate those surfaces into a triangle mesh with OpenCascade, the same open-source kernel used by FreeCAD. This runs in your browser. The mesh then goes through the normal pipeline, so you get the same angles, colour presets, mesh stats and dimensions as with an STL.
What to expect from a CAD wireframe
- Tessellation lines, not CAD edges. Curved faces become triangle fans, which shows surface density but not your original sketch edges.
- Units carry through. STEP files are usually in millimetres, so the Dimensions readout is in real-world size.
- Assemblies are merged into one render. Export single parts if you need part-by-part images.
Can I export a STEP file?
Not yet, and we're being upfront about why. Converting a triangle mesh back to STEP only produces a "faceted" STEP: thousands of flat triangular faces with none of the parametric surfaces CAD buyers expect. It's rarely useful and often rejected by marketplaces. 3DWireframer exports images, stats and STL. For true STEP output, export it from your CAD tool.
Get listing-ready images for your marketplace in 3 steps
- Drop in your modelUpload an STL, OBJ or BLEND file. We read the mesh and check it for listing readiness: triangle count, vertices, bounding box and real-world dimensions.
- Pick your anglesChoose front, three-quarter, side, top and detail views, then set wireframe and background colours to match your shop branding.
- Export and list on your marketplaceDownload the PNG set as a ZIP, with an optional stats .txt for your listing specs, and add it to your your marketplace gallery next to your beauty renders.
Frequently asked questions
Is .stp the same as .step?
Yes. Both extensions are the same ISO 10303 format, and 3DWireframer accepts either.
Why is my STEP file slow to load the first time?
The CAD kernel (about 7 MB) downloads only when you drop your first STEP file, then your browser caches it.
My STEP file failed to convert. What now?
Some exporters write non-standard STEP. Re-export as AP214 or AP242, or export an STL from your CAD tool and upload that.
